Election Commission Issues Stern Warning Over Indelible Ink Tampering in Mumbai BMC Polls
The Maharashtra State Election Commission has issued a strict warning against tampering with indelible ink during the Mumbai BMC elections. Officials debunked rumors of easy ink removal, confirming that marker pens meet long-standing security protocols. With digital voter records in place, any attempt at double voting will lead to immediate arrest and criminal charges.
Addressing the technical specifications of the marking process, the commission clarified that the use of marker pens is a long-standing protocol, established since November 2011 for local body elections. Officials emphasized that the ink is engineered to bond instantly with both the skin and the fingernail, making it virtually impossible to erase immediately after application. To ensure maximum efficacy, polling staff are instructed to apply the marker three to four times across the cuticle and skin. However, the commission was quick to point out that the ink is merely one layer of a multi-tiered security system. Even if a voter were to successfully alter the physical mark, the comprehensive voter registers maintained at every polling station serve as a final barrier. Because every vote is logged against a specific identity, any individual attempting to re-enter the queue would be identified by the documentation record, triggering an immediate intervention by law enforcement.
Simultaneously, the BMC administration has moved to debunk a series of viral social media posts falsely attributed to BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani. The misinformation suggested that the Commissioner had acknowledged flaws in the ink’s durability. Denying these reports in their entirety, the administration labeled the viral content as "baseless and factless," reiterating that the Commissioner has made no such statements. This crackdown on digital misinformation underscores the government's broader strategy to maintain public confidence in the democratic exercise. By aligning technological safeguards with strict legal consequences, the State Election Commission aims to ensure that the BMC elections remain a transparent and "one-person, one-vote" process, effectively silencing attempts to undermine the sanctity of the ballot box.
